Queen Victoria

At the head of Glenesk, the 'Queen's Well' can be found. It was built in commemoration of Queen Victoria who once stopped here for a drink of water on her way from Deeside to Glenesk. Invermark Lodge is at the foot of the 'Ladder Burn' - the usual starting off point for mountaineers climbing Mount Keen - and Queen Victoria stayed at the Lodge for a night when, after the death of the Prince Consort, Albert, she rode from Balmoral to Glenesk.

It is quite possible that she was accompanied by the famed John Brown during this visit. Visiting the 'Queen's Well' is made easy by the presence of a car park two miles away. The walk from the car park is very gentle over the slightly rolling landscape of Glenmark.

Royal Deeside, which so captivated Queen Victoria more than a century ago, is just a half-day hike away across Scotland's most easterly Munro, Mount Keen. This area continues to remain a favourite get-away for the Royal Family who gathers at Balmoral Castle each summer.
