Above: The Burn
A Scottish holiday and study centre for students and graduates. The Highland Jewel in the Crown of Londons Goodenough College. You are truly welcome at The Burn, a unique establishment situated in the Highlands of Scotland.
Gifted in 1948 to The Goodenough College by the late Mr and Mrs Herbert Russell in memory of their son James, who was killed in action in 1944 aged 21, The Burn is now a holiday and study centre for students, graduates and university staff from all over the world.
The house, built in 1791 and now completely modernised, consists of a large drawing room, dining room, library, TV room, indoor games room and eighteen bedrooms, and is centrally heated throughout.
Standing in 190 acres of park and woodland on the banks of the River North Esk, the Burn affords peace and relaxation for holidays and study in excellent accommodation at low cost, subsidised by the generous Russell legacy.
Reading Parties and Seminars
Throughout the academic year The Burn is occupied by working groups from universities, colleges and schools. These groups, either Study Parties or Staff Seminars, follow each other in quick succession. During term time, two twin bedded rooms are permanently reserved for members of Goodenough College. Additional accommodation may be available, at short notice, if parties do not take up all the accommodation, for mid-week or weekend breaks.
