The Glenesk Trust is proud to announce that they have scooped the services of one of the foremost creators of willow sculpture in the UK for their free craft demonstrations on June 6th in the ground of the Retreat.
Trevor Leat creates lifesize animals and figures from woven willow. He has created giant willow sculptures which are spectacularly burned at festivals and events such as The Wickerman Festival, The Edinburgh Hogmanay Celebrations and The Burns Light Festival in Dumfries. Based in coastal Galloway, Southern Scotland, Trevors work is exhibited widely in galleries, and seen by tens of thousands at festivals and events around the UK and beyond.
In the Retreat grounds he will be creating a life size stag similar to examples he has created for Traquair House in the Borders.
The public will be able to observe Trevor at work, and the stag will remain in the grounds as one of the permanent features of the new Nature Path which was completed in 2008.
The event runs from 12 noon to 5pm and entry is free. There will be a guided tour of the new path at 2pm. Other craft demonstrations feature drystane dyking with a donated stone carving of a Highland Cow being inserted into the dyke - willow basket making with Geoff Forrest; felt making with Tessa Mendez and wool spinning. Iain Chalmers, who also travels the country visiting festivals, will be creating a chainsaw sculpture on the day which will also remain in the Retreat grounds. The Youth Bytes bus will also be along providing free internet access and information for young people and there will be the usual stalls and raffles.
The shop, restaurant and Glenesk Folk Museum will be open as usual, making for the perfect family day out
In the evening there will be a free family ceilidh from 7pm. Bookings are being taken now for an evening meal (which is not included in the free events) on 01356 648070.
The events are being held to celebrate the completion of the new Nature Path and other works in the Retreat grounds. The Nature Path and the free events are supported by the National Lottery Breathing Places award scheme.
The Retreat Tearoom is one of the main venues for clubs and societies in the Glen, and can be booked for a variety of social functions e.g. conferences, seminars, parties, Pre-Xmas Lunches etc. by appointment.
Otherwise, the Retreat is open daily from April to October
