River Isla
Backwater Reservoir

The whole of Glenisla is very photogenic. The highest hill is Mount Blair which rises to 744 metres above sea level, then the ground drops down to less than 100 metres in the Vale of Strathmore to the south-east. The Highland Line crosses the lower glen, often as a steep ravine or spectacular waterfalls. This marks where the Sahara reached, when it blew up about 300,000 BC. The ravines provide their own cosmos of rare Alpine plants. North of this there is much granite rock and heather. The lower land is widely farmed with corn, carrots and 'tatties'. There is also beef cattle and quite a bit of forestry.

Two small glens have been dammed by the Water Board, Lintrathen Loch and the Backwater, which provide a very good tasting drinking water to the area and fishing for local anglers.

Glenisla boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Scotland. The high heather slopes, the steep corries and the winding burns that feed the River Isla give the Glen its unique feel.

Diverse flora and fauna make Glenisla a haven for wildlife and naturalists. Perfect surroundings for all outdoor activities.

Ranging up to 1068 metres and bordering Glen Shee, Glas Maol is the highest top in Glenisla. Although not quite a Munro some of the best views can be had from the top of Mt Blair where on a clear day one can see the Forth Road Bridge by Edinburgh (80miles).

The river Isla sources in Caenlochan at the northern tip of the glen, meandering its way to Meiklour where it joins the world famous salmon river, the Tay. Running across the Highland fault line the Isla boasts two spectacular waterfalls, the Slug of Auchranie and the Reekie Linn. Situated a stones throw from the main road at Kilry the Reekie Linn is the best known and very accessible.
