Lethnot Primary School

There is only one school currently in Glen Lethnot, set in the heart of the glen amidst hills and farms. At present there are ten pupils with a head teacher and various supporting, visiting teachers who teach a variety of curricular areas including music, art and P E. The children come mainly from farming backgrounds, although there a number of families who have chosen to live in the glen and work outside.

Lethnot pre-school nursery

A quiet nursery in a peaceful glen is the perfect place to send young children. At Lethnot there is a bright, attractive environment, with resources for all stages of development.

The nursery is very much part of the school. This helps making the transition to school a smooth and happy one. We have a large playground with a sandpit, willow arbour, wooden hut and grass areas. These areas set the scene for some fantastic imaginative play.

School Website

The school now has its own website,  with all of the photographs and material created by the pupils.

Moving Image Education

Moving Image Education is a four-year pilot project that commenced within the Brechin High School cluster of six primaries and the high school itself in August 2004.

The principal aim of the project is to develop literacy teaching using Moving Image Education teaching practices.

Primary 5 & 6 pupils of Lethnot primary school have been involved from the start of the project, and, so far, have produced two hugely enjoyable short films that are a credit to the imaginations and enthusiasm of such youthful film makers.  A third film is currently in production.

A Brief History of Lethnot Primary School

There has been a school on the present site since 1824. It was built to accommodate "52 pupils and 46 girls"! The building was modernised and an additional classroom and Kitchen/dinning room was built in 1970, although school dinners have been served in the village hall since 1950.

In August 1939, the school roll was forty pupils. This roll included 19 evacuees from Dundee. An extra teacher from Dundee was employed to teach the evacuees, and in December of 1939, they moved from the school to the village hall. At one time there was more than one school in the Glen. The second was situated on the West Water about five miles up the glen. This was known as the West Water School, and was only open during the winter months. Evidence shows that it was still open as late as 1904.
