Moving Image Education:  An alternative approach to literacy teaching

In August 2004 a four-year pilot project, set up with Future Learning and Teaching funding and supported by Angus Council, the Angus Digital Media Centre, Apple Education, the British Film Institute and Scottish Screen, commenced within the Brechin High School cluster of six primaries and the high school itself. The principal aim of the project is to develop literacy teaching using Moving Image Education teaching practices.

The objectives of the Moving Image education programme are:·

  • Raising 5-14 attainment levels in Reading and writing in P6, P7, S1 & S2
  • Enhancing pupils’ core skills in ICT and Teamwork
  • Increasing the range of teachers’ skills in literacy teaching
  • Training support staff to sustain this teaching method.
  • Moving Image Education also focuses on the educational priorities of:
  • Creativity
  • Transition
  • Motivation, behaviour, relevance & inclusion
  • Education for work and enterprise

Already at this early stage a wide number of benefits of integrating Moving Image education into the 5-14 curriculum are being seen. These include:·

  • A more creative approach to learning and the curriculum
  • Addressing issues of relevance to young people in project work
  • Sustained positive engagement and increased motivation, especially among disengaged and under-achieving pupils
  • Engagement with families and the wider community
  • Direct links with a range of creative/cultural organisations
  • Expansion of the creative use of ICT by both pupils and staff
  • Generation of teamworking skills and a positive sense of group ownership
  • Generation of a more entrepreneurial approach to education and learning

The Moving Image Education programme is devised around two main strands – analysis of moving image texts and creation of short films.

To ensure effective delivery of the programme a working knowledge of the ICT software involved, each member of staff delivering the MIE programme receives two days’ training each academic session, with further support available from the project leader as required. This session, many schools have chosen to include classroom assistants, support staff and parent helpers in this training aspect, widening the knowledge base within their school.
